Position Paper

"It must be the first duty of each citizen of the state to work with his mind or with his body. The activities of the individual may not clash with the interests of the whole, but most proceed within the frame of the community and be for the general good."

Collectivism is a current of thinking that values the goals of the group and the common good over the goals of any one individual, while individualism is a current of thinking that values the freedom and worth of the individual sometimes over the security and harmony of the group. This source raises the question of, is collectivism better then individualism? There are many advantages and disadvantages to both collectivism, and individualism. I am personally a believer that individualism is a better path. People tend to take advantage of others good will. If there are good will programs available, people will take advantage of them.

The American dream is starting with nothing and working your ass off to have everything. Your accomplishment is going to feel a thousand times better if you do it all by yourself. People should be able to thrive on their own without the support of the community. In a collective society some people will work hard to have everything, while others will just scrape by on the success of others. Competition is a positive aspect of individualism, As humans we thrive to be better then everyone around us. So the more people want to gain success, the higher the bar will be raised. Soon after people thrive for success, you can see which people will and won't reach the bar, and the class distinction is born. An economic class system would be a positive for society, because people know where they sit and if they want to go up a class they simply need to work harder to achieve it.

In collective society many individuals take advantage of programs such as welfare. While these programs are here to help the people that can not work or are disabled in anyway, that's not the way they are used more times then not. People use programs such as food stamps to feed their families instead of going out and getting a job to buy them on their own. So the upper class is forced to pay higher taxes to help support the lower class. People need to be able to support themselves and their families on their own. If you can not provide the most basic needs for yourself or

  1. What?! You can't swear in an essay... come on. And why is your font so weird.

Your essay seems like it is going to be pretty good. In your opening paragraph your thesis statement is missing the guide to where your essay is going. I am aware that you are not yet finished your essay so perhaps you are not totally sure of what your topics of your paragraphs are all going to be yet. I just wanted to remind you of that.

In your second paragraph you use the phrase “a positive” twice. It leaves me asking, “A positive what?” The phrase is not complete in either of these cases and they are not the same. In the first instance it is perhaps a positive aspect of individualism. The second use is probably a positive feature of a society.

In your third paragraph you may want to use the term fiscal policy. It directly relates to what you are stating here. You may also want to be a little less concrete in your statements such as “…that's not the way they are used”.

Keep going though it is looking good.
